a little motivation

Hello all (though I have no idea yet who will be reading this),

I'm not sure what I want this blog to be at this point. Most likely it will be a fairly random collection of quotes I love as well as music, book, and film reviews/recommendations. Ya know, all that stuff that keeps me going. Knowing me, I may post once a month, year, or each day (unlikely). Basically, when I find something I like, I'll let you guys know about it. Sound good? Good, I'm glad we agree.

So I'll start of here with a bang. Howard Zinn. One of my personal heroes. He is an activist, author, political scientist, historian, professor, veteran, playwright, you name it. You may have heard of one of his many books, A People's History of the United States or his play, Marx in SOHO. Really, he's just good stuff.

The following quote is from a piece he wrote for The Nation in 2002 called "The Optimism of Uncertainty."
"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness... And if we do act, in however small a way, we don't have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory." - Howard Zinn, The Nation, 2 September 2002
So there you have it. Take it and do with it what you will. I actually have an opportunity to hear Zinn speak later this month and I'm pretty excited as you can imagine.

Best,
